We are all celebrating Jorge Beltran's 10th year with the Sparano + Mooney Architecture team!  Jorge loves the creative process of developing architecture and his role in the evolution of a project from its conception to its final resolution.  When he is not at work, Jorge is playing sports with his nephews, free-hand sketching, and spending time with family.  Thank you so much, Jorge, for a decade of hard work and dedication!

Even within a super-charged digital workplace, the analog is still part of the design process for some architects - including us! Sketching, drawing and model-building by hand has always played a role in our working methodology as it helps us develop architecture in ways the computer does not as in this sketch by John.

We have been meeting a lot of talented makers lately, dedicated to craft and design excellence in a wide range of disciplines. One of these makers is ceramicist Todd Hayes. We met Todd working with the Utah State University community as we are helping them with the transformation of their Fine Arts Complex. Todd and our team at Sparano + Mooney Architecture share a dedication to materials, craft... and making. Todd describes his work in this (very inspired and architectural) way, "Fundamentally I approach my work as though it is a set of problems that need solving. Design and utility are the primary elements I consider. Throughout the process I allow materials to inform me. Guided by an aesthetic of clarity and restraint, my wares are imbued with a sense of quiet sophistication and simplicity. Elegant linear refinement lends poised beauty to my functional tableware.”

Following up our theme of the new Topaz Museum, opening later this year, we wanted to share this week's NPR interview by Terry Gross with George Takei. Takei touches on his imprisonment in the Japanese internment camps when he was young. He and his family were rounded up by “soldiers with bayoneted rifles” when he was just 5 years old, torn from their home in Los Angeles and spent the next 4 years living behind barbed wire fences in captivity. Takei’s story offers insight into his life experiences and this period of our history.

In “By Design | The Franchising of Architecture”, Witold Rybczynski asks the important question of whether or not the globalization of architecture is a good thing. Architecture as a social art serves as a reflection of a society and its values. We see architectural culture as heavily influenced by the global, but the real opportunities for invention lie in the way architecture responds to the local.

Artist JR creates “pervasive art that spreads uninvited on the buildings of the slums around Paris, on the walls in the Middle-East, on the broken bridges in Africa or the favelas in Brazil”. SMA came across his Women Are Heroes street art in Kibera, Kenya and we wanted to share the overwhelming nature of JR’s large-format pieces. He covered 22,000 SF of rooftops with the eyes and faces of the women living in the Kibera slum. JR’s art is powerful, crossing political and international boundaries—earning him recognition, including the 2011 TED prize. We hope you enjoy looking at these awe-inspiring projects.

Shigeru Ban was just named the 37th winner of the Pritzker Prize in architecture this month. Although we are long-time fans of Ban, he has chosen to remain under the radar for much of his career, focusing on serving needy communities and building non-permanent structures -often with paper. Ban has developed innovative techniques to create shelters for disaster relief and crisis areas, as well as amazing homes and churches, some meant to last only for a short duration and then be recycled. What do you think of Ban’s approach to temporal architecture and materials?

We at Sparano + Mooney Architecture have been following the work of Tara Donovan for some time. She is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work we saw at the ICA / Boston a few years back. Donovan is using everyday materials such as Scotch tape, Styrofoam cups, and drinking straws to create large scale sculptures that often have a biomorphic quality. Of her work, she says: "It is not like I'm trying to simulate nature. It's more of a mimicking of the way of nature, the way things actually grow." If you also like the way she explores “ordinary” materials, and their form and quality of light……..you may enjoy this video:
