LAX Former Air Traffic Control Tower
The former air traffic control tower at Los Angeles International Airport was designed to convert to executive offices for the Airport Commissioners. Sparano + Mooney Architecture provided architectural services for this $3.6M project, including a 13-story addition and renovation with upgrades to the tower to meet current ADA, fire and seismic building standards and an enclosed stair tower addition was incorporated to provide a second means of egress. The design was developed as a contemporary camouflaged addition, seamlessly blending in with the form of the existing tower. The tower thus continues to serve as an important modernist architectural landmark to Los Angeles area residents and the 60 million passengers travelling through LAX each year.
