ARCADIA COMMUNITY PARK POOL + BATHHOUSE

The Norman S. Johnson Aquatics Center is a Los Angeles County-operated pool located in Arcadia Park, in the largest municipal park in the City of Arcadia. Sparano + Mooney Architecture was responsible for facility visioning for the architecture and master planning as well as the programming related to a 50-meter competition pool, an adjacent recreation pool and decks, fencing, pool mechanical rooms, and staff facilities. The project included the renovation of the existing bathhouse to meet the architectural needs of the community and client agency, and to meet current codes and environmental regulations. Working closely with the client and our consultants, Sparano + Mooney Architecture proposed a solution that incorporated year-round use, competition swimming, water polo, accommodations and activities for seniors as well as those with special needs, and a number of interactive play features. This historically-significant site required sensitivity to the existing architecture, and an integrated design approach to the facility.
