This project explores movement as a basis for the generation of form. The design reveals subtle geometric and proportional logics for this new modern residence planned for a hillside site in Malibu, California. The project is the first home for a professional couple and incorporates contemporary spaces for entertaining guests, both indoors and out, as well as private retreat spaces for the couple including a study, gardens and a lap pool. The home opens out to embrace the canyon in which it is securely nestled. The street façade has precisely-located windows and a screen of punched metal for filtering light and views. The site was analyzed along with the uniquely-domestic programmatic moments to develop the form and spaces, and then to animate these moments with materials, natural light, views and spatial experiences.
