BARCELONA AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM
-
ARCHITECTURAL TEAM | John Sparano
This museum serves to educate the visitor about the agricultural history of the Catalonia region of Spain, through both the implements used in harvesting agricultural products as well as a sampling of the products themselves.
On the east side of the site, a large area of irrigated "exhibition" fields was located to demonstrate current and historical irrigation techniques as well as to display a variety of local crops. On the west side of the site, a grove of palm trees was planted adjacent to traditional fruit and vegetable market stalls.
The "exhibition" fields represented one end of the food production process and the market represented the other. In planning the site, the implements displayed in the museum were located between the two sides, thus juxtaposing each end of the agricultural process with each side's associated tools. Both the palm tree grove and the exhibition fields provided relief from the intensely urban landscape in this area of Barcelona.
