Centro is a multi-purpose civic, community and cultural arts center designed for the Spanish-speaking community in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Led by Centro Civico Mexicano and Centro de la Familia, the project aims to serve a diverse range of stakeholders with flexible, multi-functional spaces. It will foster social cohesion, mutual respect and civic engagement by providing a venue where people of different backgrounds can come together to learn, share and celebrate their heritage.
The 35,000 square-foot building will be located west of the Gateway Center and near the Salt Lake City Intermodal Transit Hub. This new facility represents a partnership between Centro de la Familia and Centro Civico Mexicano, with a mission to strengthen community ties through education, sports and entertainment, emphasizing Latin culture.
Centro’s unique community center design includes five main spaces: administrative offices for both organizations; a gymnasium; a theater; childcare facilities; and event/retail space with a commercial kitchen. The design team focused on fostering cooperation between the two clients - Centro Civico Mexicano and Centro De La Familia - and their shared spaces. The center will offer a variety of programs and activities reflecting the local population's diversity and richness. These include art exhibitions, musical performances, cultural festivals, language classes, sports clubs and cooking workshops. Centro aims to be a cultural hub, promoting creativity, learning and dialogue for everyone in the neighborhood.
