The Downey Dental Group building is a commercial mixed-use project that includes architectural design of professional dentistry offices as well as retail space. The design of the building was in part inspired by the nearby mid-century modern manufacturing facilities of the aviation and space industries found throughout the City of Downey, California. The façade includes a series of ipe wood screens that mediate between the street front and the interior architecture of the building, allowing for both privacy and connection. A landscaped strip runs between the screens and the glazed façade, providing contemporary connections between the indoor and outdoor spaces as well as providing a softening of the expanse of concrete and asphalt beyond, surrounding the urban site context.
