Madeleine Choir School is located in the densely-populated historic Avenues neighborhood outside of downtown Salt Lake City. This neighborhood has been well established in the region since the 1850s and is full of historic architectural character and charm. The significance, charisma and context of the area were crucial elements to consider and study to ensure the building, materiality, architectural detailing and proposed landscaping would complement the neighborhood and its historic surroundings. Our team was heavily involved with the community and neighborhood throughout the duration of the project design. We conducted, led and participated in an extensive outreach process with the school and its constituents, the Salt Lake City Historic Preservation office and the Greater Avenues Community Council to ensure the needs of the community would be met with the new design of the Madeleine Choir School.
Our team was tasked to design a new state-of-the-art building for the Madeleine Choir School that would provide adequate space for recreational activities and multi-purpose and instructional spaces. The new facility design includes two levels of programming to showcase a new gymnasium, performance space, dance classroom, fieldhouse, inset stage area and early childhood education center. The overall design reflects and further enhances the established neighborhood’s material and color palette, textures and scale.
