Don’t Look Back: The 1990s at MOCA offered a critical examination of the decade through the lens of MOCA’s permanent collection. Organized by Chief Curator Helen Molesworth, the exhibition featured works by artists such as Catherine Opie, Cady Noland, Sarah Sze and Paul McCarthy.
It was divided into six thematic sections: Installation; The Outmoded; Noir America; Place and Identity; Touch, Intimacy and Queerness; and Space, Place and Scale. Each section explored the era's complex intersections of race, gender, sexuality and media.
Many of the pieces had not been displayed since their initial acquisition, providing a fresh perspective on how artists responded to the socio-political landscape of the 1990s.

Gallery areas were designed to comply with present building code requirements for construction and accessibility. Sparano + Mooney Architecture generated permitting drawings for tenant improvement renovations to accommodate exhibits; coordinated architecture with the structural engineer; attended design meetings with the museum’s Exhibition Production group; prepared a building permit application and submitted permitting documents to the Building Department and Fire Department for approval; and attended plan check review meetings to obtain the necessary building permit issuance while also providing support during exhibit construction.
