This passively-designed home, located in Park City, Utah, is nestled within a beautiful grove of aspen trees and amidst a sweeping meadow. Rather than disrupt these natural features, our team of Park City architects discreetly situated the residence on a sloped mountainside intertwined with the abundant forest. The home’s strategic location allows the client to choose between community connection or peaceful solitude whenever desired.
The forest was a key inspiration and project driver – the concept for the home centered around “forest bathing,” or the practice of taking in the sensory, rejuvenating aspects of the forest. Forest bathing began as an Asian practice but is now widely-accepted as a research-supported wellness exercise performed across cultures. It is the process of mindfully walking in the forest without a specific destination and allowing your senses to fully process your surroundings, resulting in a greater sense of calm and presence. The forest bather places their wellbeing in the nest of nature.
The home’s exterior is clad in ReSawn Timber that exudes a brushed and rough finish with custom, minimally-pigmented stain. Additionally, the exterior contains board-formed concrete accents that highlight the rugged surrounding landscape. A combination of antique and contemporary finishes were seamlessly blended throughout the home. Venetian plaster blankets the walls in a soft, textured layer, providing subtle depth and elegance. Elements such as flooring, casework and trim are composed of rift-sawn white oak hardwood in a natural finish to soften the interior with warm, candid materials. Sleek custom metal work details are featured throughout the home, including the entry door, stairway panels, outdoor canopies and bridge connector to the primary suite. Unique antique light fixtures were hand selected and thoughtfully located in the home to create warm, nostalgic interior spaces. This project is not only an exercise in conceptual design and architectural excellence in the built environment, but is also highly client-centric.
