Headshot of Luis Salas, designer at Sparano + Mooney Architecture

LUIS SALAS

ROLE | Designer
EDUCATION | University of Southern California (MArch)
HOME TOWN | Salt Lake City, Utah

Luis earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Southern California, following his time spent in service to our country as a member of the United States Air Force in the U.S. and Qatar. He enjoys many aspects of architectural practice and is currently working toward licensure. Luis recognizes that the finished architectural design is typically listed as a practitioner’s favorite aspect of their work – after all, architecture is most apparent in its completed form. Yet, what Luis enjoys most about the profession is the process that leads to this finished product: the complexities of design and how nuances in code and regulations affect the end result. He says: “In a way, what we want from the architecture is constant; beauty, practicality, efficiency; It is the forces acting on design that are ever-changing. This dynamic is what I enjoy most.”

Luis is a handyman, but no ordinary one at that – he breathes new life into forgotten electronics, expertly disassembling and resurrecting defunct mobile phones with a magician's touch; Luis also single-handedly and meticulously renovated a sprinter van into a warm, inviting sanctuary in which he lived full-time during the grueling years of graduate school – a testament to his ingenuity and relentless spirit.
